What
is the goal of the H-1B program?
The ultimate goal of this project is to enable incumbent workers, unemployed
workers, and underemployed workers to effectively prepare for, and advance
in positions requiring a high level of skills within the IT, Engineering/Manufacturing,
and Bio-Technology fields in a manner that enables local companies to reduce
the number of H-1B workers and enhance their ability to compete in a global
market.
How is the H-1B program funded?
Maricopa County’s H-1B Technical Skills Training Grant is a federally funded grant.
Who is eligible for the H-1B
training?
Applicants must possess:

A minimum of 4 years of high level experience in Information Technology, Engineering, or Biotechnology

Bachelor’s degree

U.S. Citizen

If employed, earn a minimum of $35.00 per hour

H-1B targeted individuals should also possess those characteristics such as drive and initiative that will help guarantee successful completion of the high skill level training.
What happens if I drop out
or fail to complete a course
funded by the H-1B program?
Those training candidates who fail to successfully complete the certification program will be responsible for paying all fees involved with training, with exception to those who are offered employment comparable to the responsibilities and salary that they were historically accustomed to.
Can I qualify for the training
if I am currently employed?
Individuals who are employed by corporations other than those listed above will not be eligible for the H-1B training program.
Is testing/assessments involved
to determine eligibility?
Assessment will be conducted to determine interests and knowledge base
of each H-1B applicant. If the H-1B training is not appropriate for an individual,
the results will be discussed in depth with the applicant so other options
can be explored.
If I have already received
WIA (Workforce Investment
Act) funding in the past,
can I
still be eligible for the H-1B funding?
Yes, applicants who have previously received WIA funding are eligible
to receive H-1B funding as well, so long as they meet the requirements of
the program.

When does the training grant expire?
Funding for the H-1B Technical Skills Training grant will extend from January 15, 2004 through January 15, 2007.
If eligible for H-1B training, can I elect to postpone training for any duration of time or am I required to enroll into training immediately?
Once deemed eligible, individual are required to register for training within 4 weeks. Training candidates will have a total of one year from the date of approval to successfully complete their training certification. If candidate has not completed the training, candidate or employer may be required to refund the training grant in the amount of the certification.
